Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass Announced

Croteam and Devolver Digital have announced Serious Sam 4: Project Badass, currently only listed for release on Steam.

Revealed at the Reboot Develop conference this morning, there’s not much to see beyond a teaser trailer, below:

We can infer a little, however. The footage looks to come from an in-game engine (see the slight graphical glitch on the flowers on the left side of the screen at 0:17), and the focus on travelling across the landscape could suggest an open world approach.

The logo also shows a silhouetted Sam surrounded by 8 other figures, which might suggest multiple playable characters, or a multiplayer element.

Croteam says we won’t hear more about the game until E3 2018.

Dark Crimes Review

Dark Crimes debuts exclusively on DIRECTV April 19 and opens in theaters and On Demand May 18.

The real-life case that Alexandros Avranas’ Dark Crimes is based on is deliciously post-modern. As detailed by author David Grann in The New Yorker, an author named Krystian Bala had murdered a businessman named Dariusz Janiszewski sometime in 2000. The trail was lukewarm-to-cold for three years when Bala published a sensationalist crime novel called Amok, wherein he essentially wrote a fictionalized version of his own actions, leading the police to him. A true crime author essentially used his own crimes as inspiration. This sounds like the premise of an episode of Tales from the Crypt, especially given Bala’s propensity to present himself as a badass Nietzsche-quoting hipster nihilist.

Be sure to visit IGN Tech for all the latest comprehensive hands-on reviews and best-of roundups. Note that if you click on one of these links to buy the product, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

IGN has reviewed plenty of Predator monitors before, including the 27-inch and 32-inch 4k models, but the XB271HU monitor we’re looking at today may just fit exactly into the “sweet spot” for most gamers (See it on Amazon). That’s because it’s sporting an IPS panel running at 2560 x 1440 at 144Hz with G-Sync, so it’s got pretty much everything an Nvidia-owning gamer could ask for in a display. Plus if you’re into the whole “gamer look” it’s got that as well, with its pointy red feet. At $799.99 MSRP it’s on the high end of the price scale however, so let’s see if it’s worth it.

Batman: Booster Gold Takes a Strange Turn

No two chapters of Tom King’s Batman run have been exactly alike in terms of tone and visual style. However, the series makes an even bigger shift than usual with Batman #45. The closest comparison to be made is Batman #666, which took place in an alternate timeline and pushed Grant Morrison’s Batman run in a dark, hellish new direction. It’s yet another ambitious turn for King’s run, though one that relies a little too much on questionable characterization along the way.

King and artist Tony Daniel make a strong statement with their opening pages, which features a familiar DC hero attempting suicide right in the front of the reader. Fortunately, this doesn’t read like an attempt at empty shock value so much as a showcase for just how screwed up this new version of the DC Universe is. In a world without Batman, other, darker figures have crept in to take his place. And with new developments like Penguin becoming president, Jokers running amok and Talia al Ghul languishing in her Batman-free world, King crafts an intriguing look at a very different sort of DCU. Thematically, King is basically giving Batman his answer to the seminal Superman story “For the Man Who Has Everything.”

Netflix’s Maniac Looks Like a Trippy New Adventure

Maniac is Netflix’s strange new series from the minds of writer Patrick Somerville (24: Live Another Day) and director Cary Fukunaga (True Detective).

Former Superbad co-stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill reunite, with veteran actors Sally Feild and Justin Theroux rounding out the cast. For a better look at Maniac, scroll through the slideshow below:

Little is known about the series, except that Stone and Hill are “two strangers who find themselves caught up in a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial gone awry,” according to Netflix’s synopsis.

One thing is for sure, the team behind this trippy-looking series is top-notch. Somerville might not have the name recognition that Fukunaga does, but he’s written some quality television, working on shows like HBO’s The Leftovers and FX’s The Bridge. Maniac will be Fukunaga’s first directing gig since his critically acclaimed work on Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation, starring Idris Elba.

Homeland to End With Season 8

Showtime’s tentpole series Homeland is set to conclude with the upcoming eighth season.

According to Deadline, series star Claire Danes revealed the news during an interview on The Howard Stern Show. The host asked Danes if the drama would come to a conclusion after Season 8, to which she responded, “Yeah, that’s right.” She went on to say that she’s “really conflicted” about the show coming to an end.

“I mean, I’ll be ready. She’s a lot, this Carrie-freakin’ Mathison character,” Danes told Stern. “It’s a workout, so I’ll be ready for a reprieve from that.”

The series’ end date shouldn’t come as much of a shock as showrunner Alex Gansa has long been outspoken about his thoughts that Carrie Mathison’s story – as well as his run on the series – would come to a close at the end of the eighth season.
